Sequencing and safety (TWR)
The TWR's objective in the circuit
Maintain a continuous flow with minimum complexity:
- separate by time, altitude, lateral means or procedure,
- reduce the mix of performance,
- maintain situational awareness.
Controller tools (VFR circuit)
| Tool | Typical use | Note |
|---|---|---|
| "Follow traffic" | fit into the sequence | require "traffic in sight" |
| "Extend downwind" | increase spacing | reduce conflict on base/final |
| "Orbit" | hold without leaving the area | define side/altitude when necessary |
| "Remain outside the circuit" | saturation | define point + report |
| "Low approach / touch-and-go" | training | control runway occupancy |
Visual separation: how to operate safely
- If you issue "follow traffic", the pilot must:
- confirm traffic in sight,
- maintain separation,
- follow the instructed profile.
- If the pilot does not have the traffic in sight, the TWR must:
- resequence (extend/orbit),
- or apply separation by instruction and clear positioning.
Go-around
Standard:
- treat it as a normal, expected manoeuvre.
- give a clear instruction: heading, altitude, integration (e.g. "climb to 1000 ft AAL, join downwind").
Situations that require immediate action
| Situation | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| converging traffic on base | "extend downwind" / "orbit" / "do not cut base" |
| final occupied + short final | instruct a go-around or "continue" with caution and separation |
| mix of jet/piston aircraft | separate by altitude or reorder with extension |
| helicopter crossing final | hold and cross only with final clear |
