Runways

Runway system

SBEG has one runway, 11/29 (2700 × 45 m, asphalt), with no intermediate exits. Only two taxiways reach it: A, which leaves apron 1 and runs to the threshold of 11, and B, which leaves between aprons 1 and 2 and runs to the threshold of 29.

  • Runway 11

ILS CAT I, RNP and VOR. The only runway with a precision approach.

  • Runway 29

Non-precision approaches only (RNP and VOR).

Runway selection

The AIP sets no preferential runway and no tailwind limit: the runway in use follows the wind. In calm wind, 11 has the advantage of the ILS.

29 2700 × 45 m 2700 m 2700 m Non-precision PAPI
  • The AD accepts aircraft up to code 4E. The B747-8F operates under special procedures1.

DCL

SBEG has DCL (departure clearance via datalink)2. On the network, the station code is SBEG. There is no Clearance Delivery (DEL) position: Ground issues the clearances.

Station code SBEG
Who operates it SBEG_GND. Without GND, the position covering clearance top-down (TWR, APP or ACC)
Controller tool TopSky DCL window, with your personal Hoppie ACARS code
Pilot tool Aircraft ACARS or a Hoppie-compatible client, sending the clearance request to SBEG

How it works:

  1. The pilot sends the request (RCD) to SBEG, with the parking stand and ATIS letter.
  2. The controller checks the flight plan and replies with the clearance: limit, runway, SID, transponder code, ATIS letter and next frequency.
  3. The pilot accepts (WILCO/ACCEPT). The clearance is then issued and there is no voice readback.
  4. With the clearance accepted, the pilot calls Ground for start-up or pushback.

Controller setup

  • Log in to the TopSky DCL with the code SBEG before opening the position.
  • Announce it in the controller information: DCL AVBL LOGON SBEG.
  • A faulty request (invalid plan, wrong SID, no ATIS) goes back as REVERT TO VOICE: the pilot calls Ground on frequency.
  • If the pilot does not accept within a reasonable time, consider the clearance not delivered and call them by voice.

Areas of responsibility

Yellow strip: Tower. Rest: Ground. The dashed line runs through the holding points. White circles: apron numbers.
Position Responsible for
GND Aprons 1 to 5, the apron taxiway and TWY A and B up to the holding point
TWR Runway 11/29 and the TWY inside the holding points
  • SBEG has no Apron position (APRON): Ground handles all aprons.
  • Departures: Ground hands off to Tower before the holding point.
  • Arrivals: after vacating the runway, Tower hands off to Ground.

Ground flow

General rule

  • The apron taxiway links aprons 1 to 5.
  • TWY A (about 1.5 km) links the south end of apron 1 to the threshold of 11.
  • TWY B (about 1 km) links the stretch between aprons 1 and 2 to the threshold of 29.
  • With no intermediate exits, every departure is from the threshold and every landing vacates at the end of the runway.

Ground flow on runway 11: departures via A to the threshold of 11; landings roll to the end and vacate via B
Green: departures. Dashed orange: from aprons 2 to 5. Blue: landings.

  • Departures (11): A to the threshold of 11. From aprons 2 to 5, along the apron taxiway to A.
  • Landings (11): roll to the end of the runway and vacate via B, which leads back to the aprons.

Example: AZU4321, taxi to holding point runway 11 via A.

Ground flow on runway 29: departures via B to the threshold of 29; landings roll to the end and vacate via A
Green: departures. Dashed orange: from apron 1. Blue: landings.

  • Departures (29): B to the threshold of 29. From apron 1, along the apron taxiway to B.
  • Landings (29): roll to the end of the runway and vacate via A, which leads back to apron 1.

Example: GLO1234, taxi to holding point runway 29 via B.

Runway exits

Runway Exit
11 B, at the end of the runway (~2700 m)
29 A, at the end of the runway (~2700 m)

Runway occupancy

Every landing rolls the full length to the exit, and the next departure can only enter after it. Allow for that time when spacing arrivals and departures.

Runway Point TORA Used by
11 A (threshold) 2700 m All
29 B (threshold) 2700 m All
  • TWY A and B are 23 m wide3. The AIP sets no wingspan limit on the taxiways.

Aprons and airlines

Other procedures

  • On runway 11, the ILS and PAPI touchdown points do not coincide: they are 115 m apart5.
